the home run derby of golf
Obviously a lot of people don't understand the concept of this game or they simply refuse to read the description. If they did, there wouldn't be comments like "you don't even get to play a full round of golf." Uh, that's correct. There is NO chipping and putting in this long drive battle. And, no, there is no power meter to select how far your drives will go. The point of this game is to perfectly time your swing to achieve the longest drive, for the most points, as many times you can in a row, without whiffing/duffing/hazarding, in 2 minute rounds.
The simplest way to describe this game is the golf version of Homerun Battle HD. I'm not certain if it's the same developer, but it's basically the same concept. In this game, the objective is to hit golf balls as far as you can using a maddeningly simple (yet difficult to master) swing mechanism. Basically, a double-tap method, the timing of which seems impossible to perfect, but fun to try. Once you initiate your swing, then make contact, the ball (gold, bird, bounce, bonus, tornado, regular, etc.) sails over one of three chosen terrains, which feature bunkers, water hazards, and hills, with yardage markers throughout. The ball's distance (and initial flight direction) are determined by the double-tap method described above. Make your second tap a split second too soon, or too late, and you're certain to flub the ball and lose whatever multiplier bonus streak you may have had going. But hit it *just right* and the ball will fly between 250 and 750+ yards, depending on your timing. Once the ball is struck, you control the ball's flight and try to counter the changing wind and obtain bonuses for "calling your shot," hitting drives that land perfectly straight-away, and for ultra-long moon shots.
Thus, in all of the above-described respects, this game is similar to Homerun Battle. Another shared trait is you can earn gold coins for hitting a "monster" drive with a "gold ball." additionally, you earn bonus coins for various achievements. These coins can be used to buy new equipment and player customizations, just like HR Battle. In fact, in many respects, the interface is almost identical. However, admittedly, the HR Battle interface is slightly more polished. Hopefully this developer will make a few minor tweaks. (For example, some of the text graphics could be spruced up a bit).
Like HR Battle, Golf Battle has multiplayer mode, which is quite fun and addicting.
Note to Developer:
Here are some suggested changes to make this truly a five star app:
*credit drives that are launched, but have yet to land, before the timer runs out. Simple, but necessary fix.
*give bonuses for hitting, or deflecting off of signs and light posts.
*correct minor bugs that incorrectly deem a ball to be in a hazard when it's not (and vice versa). Likewise, introduce (more) varying ball carry distances each round. Often, it seems that I hit the ball the EXACT same distance numerous times each round.
*remove the obstructive graphic that covers the screen telling you which way to "call your shot." Instead, have it appear, then disappear.
*it would be nice, and fun, if the fairways were a little wider and there was a more meaningful range between left, center, and right, respectively. Especially for "called shots." also, it would be a good idea for the "called shot" feature to appear only after hitting three monster shots in a row. Then, rotate which tier to target.
Anyway, this App is a lot of fun. Well done.
